We climbed over the Continue reading "stopped in the name of splav"

Mitrovica do SabacSticky PostingsSremska Mitrovica was left through the notorious bridge. Weather was doing fine, after some river kilometers we saw an obscure object in the distance. As we came closer it turned out to be the sunken german army boat from first world war, that the Capetane in Mitrovica already had mentioned. Some raft was anchoring next to it and a small beach was around it. The people who were on the raft waved at us and asked if we had beer to share with them. We decided to stop, though we had none. They were there on holiday, fishing, their children and one young female black dog with them. They invited us for Rakija and local sausage, what we werent able to reject. And on we drifted, next stop should have been Drenovac, but we could make it only to Jarak, a village easily to identify from the river, with a fish restoran looking down from a hill. We wanted to leave next day, but then it started to rain heavily, and we sunk into a kind of sundaily trance (though it wasnt sunday), eating pancakes drinking kava. The owner of the mentioned restoran looked friendly at our adventure and invited us for a big pot of fish paprika soup, local favourite. In the afternoon we decided to leave and finally landed in some settlement consisting mostly of weekend houses near Sabac, where we spent the night. Next morning we went on while rain was still pouring on our small cottage. Close to Sabac there were some low waters what hadnt happened to us for some while. We stopped near the ruins of the old turkish Kamicak, a former castle of medieval times. There it came to our minds that something was missing, we had forgotten the anchor... I went back by bicycle, passing some interesting cottages on the banks, which were mostly built on stilts with very individual architectural styles. The anchor was still in place where we left it and we could explore Sabac, which stretches itself away from Sava... Continue reading "Mitrovica do Sabac"

After two nights in the border area between Brcko and Sremska Mitrovica, where there are not many villages close to the river, mostly weekend houses, now we have passed the border control, which was surprisingly friendly. The border authority in Brcko does not allow to land on the river banks in between Brcko and Mitrovica, as it is border area, but we met some great hospitality there, off course without ever set one foot on any embankment. In the Kapetanija, the shipping authority they served us coffee and the people of the authority were luckily nonbureaucratic. They showed us pictures of other Travellers on rafts, that had passed the border before. Now we are at the town beach, anchoring.

Review - Domaljevac to Orasje 15th aug. - 18th. aug.Sticky PostingsHeike L., Domaljevac, 15/08/08. Hilmar. Continue reading "Review - Domaljevac to Orasje 15th aug. - 18th. aug."

Orasje to Brcko, 18th. aug.

Review - Bosanski Brod to Domaljevac, 8th aug. - 15th aug.Sticky PostingsBosanski Brod - many houses in the centar of the town seem like shot down. investment ruins are next to ruins from war and victims of floods. The town stretches along the embankment, in comparison with Slavonski Brod on the croatian side it appears quite like a village. The raft stops at a small garden estate. It is to late for buying bread, so we buy 10 small pieces of bakery... Bosanski Brod. Es ist zu spaet zum Brotkauf und wir kaufen zehn Gebaeckstuecke, nachdem wir bemerken, dass sie allesamt mit Schinken gefuellt sind nochmal acht mit Kaese, die Baeckerin erfreut sich des unverhofften abendlichen Andrangs auf ihr Gebaeck... kobaš to derwentaSticky Postingswhile the girls were going by raft from bosanski kobaš to dubočac,we stayed in kobaš, because esben was painting a picture on a caffe bar. we sat there, drinking turska kava and watched the progress that the picture, someone cooking sava soup, made...
At 1pm the prayer was held in the mosque next to the caffe bar. I took a look inside and came to talk to one elderly man, who had worked in Frankfurt in Germany. I understood the mosque fell to ruins during the war and was newly built, but the islamic community in kobaš being one of the oldest in the north of bosnia. there is a written history but it is not yet published. the community is some 600 years old. the oldest grave stones have arabic letters, they are formed like steles, called nisans. They told the story of one of the oldest graves, where a very bad man was said to be buried. There is a tale, that the man left the grave several times after being buried. At 6pm we left kobaš on the road to dubočac, but eventually lost our way in the darkness and somehow ended up in derwenta... on the way we were invited for beer on a farm by the wayside. it turned out they were on holiday from sweden, where the family had moved to, so they could speak with esben who knows some swedish. The talk turned into a funny explanation of different fish in the Sava and how to catch them...

as days go by - erstens kommt es anders usw.Sticky PostingsWe felt the effects of Sava being a border shortly after splaving round the corner from Vrbas into Sava. We stopped for 3 hours at the riverbank of Davor, at a local border crossing point in Croatia. We met Veco, a friend from Zagreb who wanted to join our trip. While some kids used the Splav as the new pool equipment and enjoyed it as spring board, two of us talked closemouthed to the border police (another boundary is the language barrier). Unfortunately we were neither allowed to stay nor picking Veco up!

StArt of raft from Kukulje Skela to SrbacSticky PostingsYesterday, on tuesday 29th, our raft has finally started for the first part of the trip down the Vrbas river, from Kukulje Skela to Srbac. We were accompanied by Rastko, one of the ferry men of Kukulje ferry house. He guided us through the difficult (the water level was quite low) first miles of the river, driving the raft through obstacles like broken trees and low waters like the captain Ahab in the Hollywood version of Moby Dick, who is always spotting the mysterious whale. Some trees had to be driven over, as we were a bit unused to the steering of the raft. At one time I lost balance and fell into the river, but, as mentioned before, the water level was very low. Rastko left us in Razboj, after the most difficult part of the river. There we were welcomed by Danka from the tourist office of Srbac, who came with her sister and children and pleased us with many presents... The final part of the trip was more easy to navigate and finally we arrived at 8 pm in Srbac where we landed at some beach at the end of Vrbaska Ulica.

News from a nowhere close to KukuljeSticky Postings
The old man sitting beside me on the skeleton of the wooden raft that we are building was working on construction sites in Germany until about 1972 when he moved back to Yugoslavia. He gives some advice about the connection of the wooden beams and silently smokes his cigarette. The temperature is so hot, that we have to go swimming five times a day. The river is the Vrbas, its source somewhere in the bosnian mountains, joining the Sava river near Srbac, a border town to croatia. The other old men which are often around our construction site (an old ferry point with a wooden ferry near Kukulje) are also helping us frequently. There is the ferryman, who delivers us the electricity from his ferry house, then the man, who rings the bell at the local church and other passing locals. NEWS FROM BANJA LUKA N° 5Sticky PostingsFive girls in Banja Luka, together again, yesterday Isa, me /Nora/ and my daughter Selma arrived, Heike last Friday. We saw a nice green place where we can build our raft, near Laktasi, 25 kilometers in the north of Banja Luka / we have a liitle red car borrowed from Mikki, who lives here, that makes some things easier, e.g. our visitings on the river, to find a part of the Vrbas without so many stones, deep enough for the raft. Isobel, born in Banja Luka, lives in U.S.A, will join us in august and help us with the language! as soon as possible we will change our place: from the little flat downtown to the river to start start start. before we have to organize the wood, barrels, tools, but we are close closer closest. On Friday Hilmar and Stephan will arrive. We are in a rush, only 15days left. see you. more news fots news the next days. // greetings from here /

NEWS FROM BANJA LUKA N° 4Sticky PostingsI finally managed by myself to register at the foreign affairs office of Banja Luka. of course first i was sent to the very wrong end of the line, like for car registration;-) but than a polite lady guided me through the jungle of MUB, asking more than 5 people, to a police officer who didn't even manage to figure out from which country my passport is…he was like: Austria? Netherlands? And I was like no nemačka..but at the end I had to pay two convertible marks and got this little white paper with the stamp. and so i stopped being afraid that the same like two years ago in croatia will happen to me again (because there they nearly put us to jail because of having no registration and trying to escape the rain in a barn..) I learned some new expressions I really like: Nema više - no more hajde - come on može - ok, alright ispod crte- under the line sve u redu - it`s alright Hlana- Watermelon pola- half videčemo- we`ll see I mean I`m still so far away from speaking the local language but at least i`ve the impression my listening comprehension is getting better...and i learned how to cook myself turkish coffee. still it tastes really different from the ones you can get in a very few of the bunch of cafe-places in Banja Luka..they say one has to go to Sarajevo for the real coffee experience.. and i loaned dejans old bike and i can start going along the vrbas to check out a place where to build the raft and to start the trip. i think i`m going on sunday because during the week, even if its mostly just one date per day, or maybe like one offical and one more private everything takes always more time..sometimes i call first and than they say, call me again in two hours,or "oh he extended his holidays for a few days.. " and than when i call again: okay lets met in three hours.. even if we settled a date for ten in the morning.. but of course its just an example in general the people are always before me on our meeting points.maybe they think germans are always in time- well i`m mostly five minutes late... ![]() from the left: i forgot the name of him because i`m so so bad in names..(big excuse!), than its zelimir and jadranko and me with my new haircut at mister X cafe in Banja Luka yesterday i met jadranko, he studies fine arts in belgrade and i think he`s really connected in Banja Luka, even if he`s not living here anymore, and zelimir, he´s going to be an architect and is doing a weekly radio show at BIG radio and it was great. because it was just so very normal to talk to them, not constructed at all and they gave me some helpfull advices as well. and one of Jadrankos favourite movies is You and me and everyone we know, which i like lot, too. miranda july, the director and main actress is running the learning to love you more website....i can really recommend this!

NEWS FROM BANJA LUKA N° 2Sticky Postings2008-06-25 BANJA LUKA I think today its about 35° degrees. In my room I feel like in the installation "Rear Window (Story No. 6)" of Anny und Sibel Öztürk, they reconstructed the living room of their Great Aunt from Istanbul and included furniture and atmosphere from their childhood memory: it is dark and hot; loud road noise can be heard, voices talking thrown, the curtains blowin, the light and automobile headlight past the window. Kratkofil film-festival Banja LukaSticky PostingsJust arrived in Banja Luka i ran into Kratkofil film festival that is screening mostly short films for the second year now from june 11th-15th. It is happening split up in the locations of the cinemas Palas (Trg Krajine downstairs) and Kozara (Sime Solaje), the Dom Omladine and the terrace of the old Boska shopping mall, which offers a great view onto the green hills around Banja Luka and the investment ruin of a building across the street. Sadly the idea of open air screening has failed so far due to really hard rain. On my first day I watched only some polish contemporary films and the queer/lesbian/gay part of the programme. The latter was mostly dedicated to the idea of queer identity self-discovery and being discovered by others. The queer films i saw some weeks ago in Berlin were surely more radical in their refusal of typical identity problems but those shown here were also good films, I especially liked the film "Family reunion" from iceland. I felt very welcome, as the festival team did invite me when they heard that i came all the way from Germany. On friday and saturday, there were also concerts. I especially like the band Repetitor from Belgrade, who played some sort of stop and go postrock. On Saturday I saw some short films that went more into the direction of documentary short films. I mostly liked the film "Wrestling" from Iceland. a film about a farmer and wrestler, a traditional sport in iceland, that lived a life all dedicated to work and eventually found oil on his grounds, sold his house and made known his love for a man, his friend, also a wrestler. This was also the festival winner. I also liked "Baca Janos Cerven", about a shepherd in Slovakia. On sunday I went into "The mole" (Der kleine Maulwurf or Krtek by Zdenek Miller) classical czechoslovakian children's animation with Selma (4 years old). Good to know that she understood everything even though it was in serbian language. Sadly she was the only child in the cinema and not much other viewers either, sunday morning... Then there was the great final party and I promised to come back again next year and invite everyone to the Leipzig Dokumentary film festival in october...
